In order to explain the function of the State, Plato metaphorically compared social equilibrium to a weaving 1. The threads of the web (State) and of the weft (citizens) have to be of different qualities so as to constitute themselves as a diverse but unified social fabric.
¡NO PASARÁN! is a trench made up of 30 burlap sacks, each with a political slogan painted on it. The number 30, the materiality of the bags and the chosen political slogans are decisive for the concept of this piece. ¡NO PASARÁN! was conceived to be acquired by 30 different people, each of whom is responsible for one of the trench parts.
A brief explanation: I begin by the number 30, a number that I chose to count memorable events in my daily life and that has been with me since 2008; the burlap made of jute, as a textile material with coarse and coarse fibres is thought of for a better show the threads; the political slogans I have selected are statements that inspire and encourage me and they all hold a historical memory that we must honor.
I return to the weaving metaphor: what provides fabric density is the union between threads, just as what gives a larger dimension to the piece resides in the fact that 30 people (each with their bag and their slogan) become holders of a part that gives meaning to the whole. The political affirmations colludes the pieces with each other. By sharing these affirmations, the 30 pieces build a fabric that involves us all, together in a militant trench against totalitarianism, populism and oblivion.
The sum of the parts makes ¡NO PASARÁN! bigger.

1:‘To each its own bag’, i.e., each person can buy only one bag.
When all bags/phrases are purchased, a book will be published.
